Purpose: This study aimed to identify the contents and effects of eXtended reality (XR)-based nursing practice of student nurses through systematic review.
Methods: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, we conducted a systematic review using seven electronic databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, CINAHL, KoreaMed, RISS, and KISS. The search terms included ¡¯Virtual Reality (VR)¡¯, ¡¯Mixed Rreality(MR)¡¯, ¡¯Augmented Reality(AR)¡¯, ¡¯eXtended Reality(XR)¡¯, ¡¯metaverse¡¯, ¡¯intervention¡¯, and ¡¯nursing student¡¯. Out of 700studies retrieved, 17studies were finally included.
Results: Six out of the 17 studies had randomized controlled trial (RCT) designs. Regarding the type of XR, VR was the most common, with 12 studies using it, followed by 4 studies on AR and 1 on MR. The areas of nursing practice covered a variety of topics, including medication administration, gastrointestinal nutrition, infection control, physical assessment, and emergency nursing. Nursing practice using XR resulted in a statistically significant increase in knowledge and skills, and in some studies, it also improved confidence, educational satisfaction, and self-efficacy. Limitations of the included studies were the lack of rigorous methodological research design and the potential for a risk of bias.
Conclusion: While further research is needed to accumulate more evidence, XR-based nursing practice has the potential to enhance nursing students¡¯ competencies and patient safety, addressing the limitations of clinical practice. Future research should focus on greater rigor and more comprehensive reporting of study details.
